About Two Years in Production
Adapted to Capture the Unique Storytelling Rhythm of Webtoons
Kakao Entertainment announced on December 23 that it will exclusively release the webtoon 'Gaemi', an adaptation of the novel of the same name by French author Bernard Werber.
This webtoon is supported as part of the '2025 Global Webtoon Intellectual Property (IP) Production' project, organized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Creative Content Agency. Starting December 24, it will be available on KakaoPage and Kakao Webtoon. Out of a total of 250 episodes, the first 10 episodes will be released on the launch date. KakaoPage will also hold events such as bundled episode rental discounts and cash lucky draws.
The novel 'Gaemi', first introduced in Korea in 1993, made a significant impact upon its debut and has since become a steady seller that continues to be widely read. Its unique narrative, which intertwines the worlds of humans and ants, and its compelling message have left a deep impression on readers worldwide.
Given that the webtoon is based on a globally popular novel, 'Gaemi' underwent a lengthy production process of over two years. Produced by the webtoon studio Kenaz, the series is illustrated by Kim Yonghoe. Kim Yonghoe previously demonstrated outstanding storytelling skills in works such as 'Why Did You Come to Goblin Hill?'-which achieved 100 million views and was adapted into an animation-as well as 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' and 'Dr. Fine's Day'. With 'Gaemi', Kim Yonghoe is expected to showcase his strong directorial abilities once again.
Like the original novel, the webtoon begins with Jonathan Wells inheriting a house according to his uncle's will. Episodes that reveal the mystery and world-building of the original story are placed in the early part of the webtoon to help readers quickly immerse themselves. A representative from Kakao Entertainment stated, "We devoted significant effort to adapting the novel into a format suitable for webtoons," and added, "By alternating episodes between the human and ant communities while focusing on each character's narrative and traits, we have captured a unique storytelling rhythm exclusive to webtoons."
