Internationalization Strategy
The Tongmyong University Chinese International Student Alumni Association has been officially launched in Beijing, China.
This development is expected to serve as an opportunity for Tongmyong University's achievements in global education and regional innovation strategies to expand into a local alumni network in China.
On December 20, Tongmyong University held the inauguration ceremony for the Chinese International Student Alumni Association in Beijing, officially announcing the establishment of an alumni network spanning across China. The event was attended by President Lee Sangcheon, Chairman Kang Kyungsu, Vice President Lee Eungju, Director of International Affairs Ahn Yohan, as well as other key university officials and faculty members. A total of 100 Chinese alumni participated, including 55 doctoral graduates, 23 master's graduates, and 22 bachelor's graduates.
In his congratulatory remarks, President Lee Sangcheon stated, "The launch of the Chinese International Student Alumni Association marks an important starting point in connecting Tongmyong University and Chinese society," adding, "As you are valuable assets of Tongmyong University, I hope this alumni association will grow into a community that connects each of you."
He also mentioned that the university is the only institution in Korea to receive a 5-star rating for educational quality in the QS World University Rankings, emphasizing Tongmyong University's commitment to becoming an institution that fosters growth in both the local and global communities based on internationally recognized educational competitiveness.
On the same day, the university presented Outstanding Alumni Awards to graduates active in the academic, educational, and industrial sectors in China. Jang Sewol, Vice President of Zhejiang Gongshang University, was selected as the representative awardee, and a total of 12 alumni received awards. The organizational structure of the alumni association was also officially established. Jin Chang, Head Professor of Visual Design at Tianjin University of Technology, was appointed as the inaugural president, and a board of 24 regional chapter leaders representing 15 regions in China was formed.
Going forward, the alumni association plans to focus on expanding exchanges among alumni, supporting the development of their alma mater, and strengthening Korea-China educational cooperation. This launch aligns with Tongmyong University's ongoing strategy to expand its global education programs. The university is actively working to nurture global talent by increasing dual degree programs with overseas universities, joint research and curriculum operations, and student exchange programs.
Tongmyong University is also strengthening education, research, and industry-academia cooperation linked to regional strategic industries through the RISE (Regional Innovation System for Education) initiative. The establishment of the Chinese International Student Alumni Association is seen as an example of the university's regional innovation strategy expanding into its overseas alumni network.
Ahn Yohan, Director of International Affairs, commented, "The launch of this alumni association is an important milestone in Tongmyong University's internationalization strategy," adding, "We will continue to expand Korea-China educational exchanges and cooperation with regional industries in collaboration with the alumni association."
To date, Tongmyong University has produced a total of 1,442 Chinese graduates, including 865 undergraduates and 577 master's and doctoral graduates. Currently, there are 478 Chinese students enrolled at the university. The university expects that, with the launch of this alumni association, alumni networking, support for junior international students, and academic and industrial cooperation will be further strengthened.
