Selected as a City with "Four Consecutive Years" of Population Growth
Gwangyang City in South Jeolla Province announced the top 10 news items that received the most votes from city officials and citizens among the major policies and priority projects promoted throughout 2025.
The city conducted a survey for the "2025 Gwangyang City Top 10 News" from December 3 to December 11, over a period of nine days, through the Saeol administrative system, the mobile administrative platform "MY Gwangyang" app, and the city’s official website. The survey targeted 20 shortlisted candidates, which were selected through an internal review from 36 news items submitted by 26 departments.

As a result, the top five news items were: Gwangyang City, the only city in Jeonnam to achieve "four consecutive years" of population growth; all administrative services in Gwangyang City now conveniently available through the "MY Gwangyang" app; designation and approval of the development plan for the Gubongsan Tourism Complex in Gwangyang; designation of Gwangyang City as an "industrial crisis preemptive response area," marking a turning point for its leap as a future steel city; and Gwangyang City winning the "National Local Government Job Award" for 11 consecutive years.
Ranked sixth to tenth were: Gwangyang Maehwa Village selected as one of the "Top 100 Korean Tourist Attractions for 2025-2026"; Gwangyang Seomjingang Jaechup registered as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System, paving the way for "K-Food"; Gwangyang City ranked 23rd nationwide in the "2024 Regional Development Index," and first in Honam for regional economic power and resident vitality; Gwangyang City upgraded to a leading area for educational development, the only one among Jeonnam’s managed regions; and the successful hosting of the 2025 Gwangyang International Media Art Festival, accelerating the city’s transformation from an industrial city into a hub for media art in Asia.
A city official stated, "The selection of the designation as an industrial crisis preemptive response area, approval of the Gubongsan Tourism Complex, four consecutive years of population growth, and 11 consecutive years of winning the job award as the top 10 news items demonstrates that Gwangyang City's policy capabilities to prepare for the future, even amid crises, are being felt by citizens." The official added, "Going forward, Gwangyang City will continue to pursue administration that brings tangible changes to citizens’ daily lives, focusing on restoring industrial competitiveness, fostering new industries, improving residential conditions, and transforming into a city of culture and tourism."
