This was finalized after an official certification review by the International Baccalaureate (IB) headquarters, which took place over two days starting from December 3. It is regarded as a significant achievement that has elevated the international competitiveness of public education in the Paju area.
The International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum is a globally accredited educational program aimed at developing students' critical thinking skills, inquiry abilities, and global awareness. Among its programs, the Middle Years Programme (MYP) is designed for students aged 11 to 16 and is characterized by concept-based and inquiry-based learning that connects various subjects.
Paju Gwangil Middle School was first designated as an IB 'Interested School' in February 2023, marking the official start of IB education implementation. Teachers voluntarily conducted joint research on the IB philosophy, as well as its teaching, learning, and assessment systems, and prepared for the second-stage certification as a 'Candidate School,' receiving official approval in November of the same year. After faithfully operating the MYP curriculum for over two years, the school passed the rigorous review by the IB headquarters in early December this year and ultimately achieved the final certification as a 'World School.'
Paju City has collaborated with the Paju Office of Education to support the operation of IB Interested Schools and Candidate Schools as part of the Special Education Development Zone project, thereby strengthening the region's educational capacity. With this certification, the city plans to further enhance the quality of public education in Paju by supporting the gradual expansion of the IB curriculum and building inter-school networks, thereby reinforcing the foundation for nurturing globally competent talent.
Choi Heejin, Director of Lifelong Education, stated, "The IB World School certification obtained by Paju Gwangil Middle School will serve as a new milestone for education in Paju City," adding, "We will continue to actively support the stable establishment and expansion of the IB curriculum in the future."
