Serving as Co-Chair for Two Years Starting Next Year
Setting Policy Direction in Disaster Management
South Korea has been elected as co-chair of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group, alongside Singapore.
On December 21, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced that it had been elected co-chair of the APEC Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group, together with the Singapore Civil Defence Force.
The Ministry will serve as co-chair for two years starting January 1, 2026, and will be responsible for mediating differences among member states on all agenda items discussed at the working group meetings. Through this role, South Korea aims to lead the policy direction and cooperation in disaster management across the Asia-Pacific region.
The Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group is a practical consultative body established to strengthen cooperation in disaster management in the Asia-Pacific region. It was launched following the 2004 South Asian tsunami and has been officially operating since 2010.
An official from the Ministry of the Interior and Safety explained, "The election as co-chair is a recognition of the successful hosting of the APEC disaster management meeting held from July 30 to August 1 this year."
