This conference was organized to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Korea’s liberation, providing a platform to share the results of student-led historical exploration activities and to seek new directions for history education centered on experience and inquiry, rather than simple memorization.

More than 200 participants, including Superintendent Im Taehee, students, and teachers who took part in the Ulleungdo and Dokdo exploration in July and the visit to independence movement sites in China in October, attended the conference.

This event provided a detailed overview of the outcomes of the "Understanding Our History Education" initiative, which the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education has been promoting in celebration of the 80th anniversary of liberation.

In particular, considering the event as a festival of history education for students, it was organized around student participation, featuring exhibitions of history education activity outcomes, historical and cultural performances, and case presentations of historical exploration activities.

The case presentations were led by students and included: strengthening awareness of territorial sovereignty through field trips to Ulleungdo and Dokdo; understanding the history of the independence movement through visits to related sites in China; and the outcomes of inquiry projects linked to the curriculum before and after the explorations.

The provincial office plans to ensure that history education goes beyond the simple transmission of knowledge, fostering students’ historical awareness through direct experience and critical thinking. In addition, by widely sharing outstanding cases from schools, the office aims to continuously promote the revitalization of history education.

Superintendent Im Taehee said, "I hope that everyone who participated in the Understanding Our History Education program in commemoration of the 80th anniversary of liberation had a memorable experience," adding, "I deeply thank all the teachers and students who completed the history exploration schedule together without any setbacks."

He continued, "History is the process that has led to who we are today, and from that process, we gain lessons and a mirror to reflect ourselves," and added, "I hope that through the Understanding Our History program, all students will grow with a correct understanding of history."
