The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism announced on December 19 that it is moving forward with the posthumous awarding of a cultural order of merit to the late actor Yoon Seokhwa.
The ministry explained, "This is to honor her contributions to the development of the performing arts sector over many years as a leading stage actress representing Korea."
The ministry added, "She appeared in numerous productions, showcasing a wide range of acting skills, and received various theater awards and Baeksang Arts Awards, earning recognition as a representative figure in Korea's performing arts scene. In addition to her acting career, she also played roles as a director and as the head of the installation theater 'Jeongmiso,' and served as the chairperson of the Korea Theater People Welfare Foundation, contributing to the advancement of the theater community in multiple ways."
The cultural order of merit is awarded to individuals who have made significant contributions to the development of culture and the arts and to the enjoyment of culture by the public. The order is divided into five classes: Geumgwan (Gold Crown), Eungwan (Silver Crown), Bogwan (Precious Crown), Okgwan (Jade Crown), and Hwagwan (Flower Crown). The class to be awarded posthumously will be determined after a review of her achievements.
The late actress made her debut in 1975 with the play "Kkulmat" and continued to work steadily across various fields, including theater, musicals, television dramas, and films. On the afternoon of December 19, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Choi Hwi-young visited the memorial altar to pay his respects.
