On December 19, Jeollanam-do held the Jeonnam RISE Vision Proclamation and Performance Sharing event at the Kim Daejung Auditorium in the provincial government building, under the slogan "Renewing Universities, Brightening the Region, Jeonnam RISE!"
The sharing event was attended by Kim Youngrok, Governor of Jeollanam-do and Chairperson of the Jeonnam RISE Committee, Lee Juhui, President of Dongshin University and Co-Chairperson, presidents of 18 participating universities, heads of the Jeonnam RISE project groups, faculty and staff, as well as around 500 university students involved in the project.
During the event, the achievements of the Jeonnam RISE initiative were shared through commendations for meritorious contributors, the awarding of university plaques, and presentations of exemplary cases. The governor's commendation was awarded to 17 individuals who contributed to the establishment of the Jeonnam RISE system, and plaques were presented to the 18 participating universities as the Jeonnam RISE system enters full implementation.
In his commemorative address, Governor Kim highlighted major achievements by each university, including the publication of SCI (Science Citation Index) papers in the next-generation petrochemical materials field, the training of adult-oriented life care and wellness professionals, and the establishment of a digital experiential education platform for the marine industry targeting foreigners. He also encouraged university officials and students who achieved meaningful results in a short period of time.
Governor Kim emphasized, "Universities are the places that nurture talent in every field, from advanced industries such as AI, offshore wind power, smart shipbuilding, and artificial sun, to petrochemicals, steel, and agricultural AX. The region will only thrive if universities thrive. I will create a Jeollanam-do where local students do not have to leave for the metropolitan area in search of jobs."
He continued, "In this era of great transformation, the joint growth of universities, local governments, and industries is an essential strategy, and Jeonnam RISE is at its center. As universities have many roles to play going forward, I ask you to take another step forward and embrace new challenges."
Meanwhile, Jeollanam-do has established a five-year master plan for 2025 under the vision of "GRAND Jeonnam led by the region and universities." In the first year, a total of 72.7 billion won will be invested in the RISE project, including 8.5 billion won in provincial funds, which is the highest level of local government matching in the country. The province is promoting 15 unit projects under five major projects, and 52 detailed initiatives.
