According to the county on December 19, the "Agrobiological Industry Zone" is a system based on the Jeonbuk Special Act, aimed at fostering core hubs for the agrobiological industry by building support systems such as clustering related industries and easing regulations, centered on regionally specialized agrobiological resources.
This selection is seen as official recognition of the competitiveness that Jangsu County has built up over many years with "Jangsu Hanwoo," creating favorable conditions for promoting projects related to the "Low-Carbon Hanwoo Industry Zone" and serving as a turning point for the transition of the local agrobiological industry.
Since being designated as a leading zone last year, the county has actively secured resources to promote the project, including 3 billion won for the Smart Village Distribution and Expansion Project and 10 billion won for the Rural Space Improvement Project.
With this new designation, the county plans to further accelerate efforts to secure additional funding from national and provincial sources, in addition to the 5 billion won project budget, to establish a stable foundation for project implementation.
The "Low-Carbon Hanwoo Industry Zone" is the first case in Korea to promote low-carbon livestock industrialization at a regional level. From this year through 2029, a total investment of about 28.8 billion won will be made across 90.6 hectares in Jangsu-eup, Janggae-myeon, Gyenam-myeon, and Cheoncheon-myeon.
The core of this project is to connect and operate existing facilities for Hanwoo production, breeding, slaughter, processing, and distribution as a single industrial zone.
The county plans to gradually implement initiatives centered on the industrial zone, including the development of low-methane breeding stock and feed technology, improving productivity by shortening the Hanwoo breeding period, establishing a Carbon Emission Management System (JCMS), advancing slaughterhouses and processing centers with low-carbon technology, and building a low-carbon Hanwoo distribution and sales system.
In addition, the county intends to develop the "Low-Carbon Hanwoo Industry Zone" as a leading model that can be expanded nationwide, by promoting the project based on a public-private-academic cooperation system.
With Jangsu County at the center, Jangsu Hanwoo Local Corporation, local livestock and agricultural cooperatives, Jeonbuk National University, and ET Biotech will participate to apply R&D outcomes in the field and gradually standardize the verified low-carbon Hanwoo industry model for expansion to other local governments.
With this designation, the county aims to go beyond its previous status as a "major Hanwoo production area" and emerge as a key hub for the low-carbon livestock industry. Through the designation of the agrobiological industry zone, it plans to systematically expand related infrastructure across production, processing, and distribution, laying the foundation for a sustainable livestock industry while also striving to establish "Jangsu Hanwoo" as a premium brand.
County Governor Choi Hunsik stated, "The newly selected 'Low-Carbon Hanwoo Industry Zone' marks an important turning point for gradually advancing the structure of the Jangsu Hanwoo industry. Now that the administrative foundation is in place, we will apply low-carbon technologies that can be felt in the field, ensuring income stability for livestock farmers and building a sustainable livestock industry to realize the premium branding of 'Jangsu Hanwoo'."
