Bank of Korea Awards Commendation for Outstanding Efforts in Apprehending Currency Counterfeiters in the Second Half of the Year
"Check the Movement of the Hologram to Verify Authenticity"
On December 19, the Bank of Korea announced that it had awarded the Governor's Commendation and a monetary reward to the Chungnam Provincial Police Agency's Criminal Task Force, which made significant contributions to apprehending currency counterfeiters. The commendation for those who have contributed to the arrest of currency counterfeiters is awarded twice a year, in the first and second half, to both police stations and individuals.
The Chungnam Provincial Police Agency's Criminal Task Force tracked down and identified a suspect and three accomplices who, in October last year, counterfeited 9,188 fifty-thousand-won bills (worth approximately 460 million won) and attempted to use them as payment for cryptocurrency purchases, only to be reported by their transaction counterpart. The police issued a red notice for the suspect who fled overseas, forced their deportation, and arrested them at a domestic airport gate last month.
The Bank of Korea stated, "When receiving multiple bills, we recommend counting them in a well-lit area while also checking the movement of the hologram to verify authenticity," and urged, "If you receive counterfeit bills, please report them to the police immediately."
Meanwhile, in September, the Bank of Korea completely revamped its 'Easy Guide to Detecting Counterfeit Bills' application (app), allowing users to access detailed information related to counterfeit currency.
