Man in His 20s with Intellectual Disability Beaten
Seven Teenagers Indicted
A group of teenagers who committed acts of cruelty against a man with an intellectual disability, including burning him with a cigarette, and attempted to extort millions of won, have been brought to trial.
The Women and Children Crime Investigation Division of the Seoul Southern District Prosecutors' Office (Chief Prosecutor Choi Heejeong) announced on December 18 that it had indicted seven people-five male teenagers and two female teenagers-on charges including rape resulting in injury under the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment, etc. of Sexual Crimes.
Two of the suspects have been detained and will stand trial in custody.
The group, including a teenage girl identified as A, is accused of luring a man in his twenties with a level-3 intellectual disability, identified as B, to a park in Yeouido and assaulting him because they did not like the message he had sent to A.
They allegedly forced B to strip naked, subjected him to group assault, committed acts of cruelty such as burning his arm with a cigarette, and filmed the abuse.
As a result, B suffered third-degree burns and other injuries requiring six weeks of medical treatment.
After the assault, the group allegedly tried to extort 4.5 million won from B by threatening not to return his bicycle and mobile phone unless he paid, but the attempt was unsuccessful.
After receiving the case from the police, the prosecution conducted supplementary investigations, including re-interviewing the victim, seizing and forensically examining mobile phones, and further questioning the suspects, which led to additional charges being confirmed.
A prosecution official stated, "We will strictly punish juvenile offenders who commit serious crimes to prevent similar incidents from recurring and to maintain social order."
