Buk-gu Accepts Council's Disqualification Conclusion
Facilities Management Corporation to Operate Under Acting Chairman System for Now
Gwangju Buk-gu has withdrawn the appointment of the candidate for Chairman of the Buk-gu Facilities Management Corporation, who became the subject of controversy due to his previous support for former President Yoon Suk-yeol. This decision was made after the Buk-gu Council adopted an opinion of disqualification during the personnel hearing.
On December 19, Buk-gu announced that it had decided not to appoint the candidate for Chairman of the Buk-gu Facilities Management Corporation. Buk-gu explained that this decision was based on a comprehensive consideration of the results of the personnel hearing by the Buk-gu Council and local public opinion regarding the candidate's qualifications.
Previously, Buk-gu had been proceeding with the appointment process for a new chairman since September, following the resignation of the former chairman. After forming an executive recommendation committee and conducting an open recruitment, two final candidates were recommended. Buk-gu designated Hyunsoo Lee, who received the highest interview score, as the final candidate for chairman.
However, controversy over the candidate's qualifications arose after the nomination. In 2022, ahead of the presidential election, Lee declared his support for then-People Power Party candidate Yoon Suk-yeol while running as an independent. Additionally, it was revealed that in 2020, while serving as a Buk-gu council member, his spouse's flower shop supplied flowers worth several million won to the district office, violating the Local Contract Act. He received disciplinary action and issued a public apology for this incident.
At the personnel hearing held by the Buk-gu Council on December 16, Lee explained his declaration of support for Yoon Suk-yeol by saying, "I consider it a rash act, and I still regret it."
Subsequently, the Special Committee on Personnel Hearings of the Buk-gu Council unanimously adopted an opinion of disqualification and sent a report detailing the results of the hearing to the executive branch on the same day. Buk-gu accepted the decision.
As a result, the Buk-gu Facilities Management Corporation will be operated under an acting chairman system for the time being. A Buk-gu official stated, "We will do our utmost to ensure stable operations through the acting chairman system so that there is no disruption in the management of the corporation."
