From Disaster-Prone Site to Public Housing
Gangneung Integrated Public Rental Housing Project Progresses Smoothly
Gangneung City, Gangwon Province (Mayor Kim Hongkyu), has completed the detailed design and administrative procedures for the 'Integrated Public Rental Housing Construction Project' being promoted in the Ipam-dong 498 area, entering the final preparation stage for groundbreaking in 2026.
The integrated public rental housing project is being carried out with a total project cost of 26.7 billion KRW to overcome the limitations of state-led rental housing supply and to create a stable residential environment for vulnerable groups such as young people, newlyweds, and those just starting their careers. The project also aims to address regional decline caused by low birth rates and an aging population.
The building will consist of one basement floor and ten above-ground floors, with a total floor area of 6,815 square meters and 80 units in total. The units will include 20 units of 20 square meters, 17 units of 42 square meters, and 43 units of 51 square meters, based on exclusive area.
To enhance residents' convenience, the complex will also be equipped with community facilities such as a shared laundry room and a community room. Completion is targeted for December 2027.
The project site is the former demolition site of Daemok Geumgang Apartment Complex, which was previously classified as a Grade E disaster risk facility. Through the development of public rental housing, the city expects to resolve longstanding safety issues in the area and simultaneously improve the urban environment.
Kim Hongkyu, Mayor of Gangneung City, stated, "We plan to actively address regional decline by creating stable housing conditions that enable young people to move to and settle in Gangneung. Going forward, we will continue to focus on providing customized public housing to ease the housing burden for young people and other citizens."
