The Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency and the Autonomous Police Committee announced on the morning of December 18 that they had caught 13 drivers during a sobriety checkpoint targeting drivers commuting to work.
Among those caught, one driver had a blood alcohol concentration high enough for license cancellation, seven cases resulted in license suspension, and five drivers received warnings and were let go.
With concerns about drunk driving increasing at the end of the year, Gwangju police will continue to conduct regular checkpoints, focusing on entertainment districts and restaurant areas.
In Gwangju, the number of fatalities from drunk driving accidents over the past four years has shown a downward trend: eight in 2022, four in 2023, three last year, and zero so far this year.
