The Korean Society for Sustainable Development is a professional academic organization in the field of sustainable development, established in September 2020 to address the ecological, social, and economic sustainability crises facing society in the era of climate crisis. Starting in 2025, the society established this award to recognize not only academic achievements but also the contributions of organizations, groups, and individuals who have brought about tangible changes in the field.

This "2025 Sustainable Development Award" holds significant meaning as it is the first award established and presented by the society, and is given to heads of public sector organizations who have led the spread and implementation of sustainable development values.

Gwangju City received high marks for its comprehensive promotion of environmental and ecological conservation policies, realization of social values and community inclusion, and strategies for sustainable urban and regional development.

Oh Sugil, President of the Korean Society for Sustainable Development, explained the reason for the award, stating, "Gwangju City has made sustainable development a core value of its administration, reflecting it throughout its policies, and has set an exemplary case for sustainable development through citizen participation and field-oriented practices."

Mayor Bang Sehwan said, "Gwangju City has made continuous efforts in various areas for sustainable development," adding, "We will continue to do our utmost to create a city where all citizens can be happy."
