Senior Coast Guard Officer in His 50s Booked for Secretly Attaching GPS Tracker to Subordinate's Car

A senior officer of the Korea Coast Guard in the Gyeongnam region has been booked by the police on suspicion of secretly attaching a GPS tracker to a subordinate's vehicle.

On December 17, the Gyeongnam Provincial Police Agency announced that it had booked a man in his 50s, Inspector A, who is affiliated with a local coast guard station, without detention on charges of violating the Act on the Protection and Use of Location Information.

According to the police, Inspector A is suspected of secretly installing a GPS tracker on the vehicle of Inspector B, a colleague in his 40s from the same department, while serving as the head of the intelligence division in the second half of this year, and collecting related information.

Inspector B reportedly discovered the GPS tracker in his car earlier this month and notified his station, after which the Gyeongnam Provincial Police Agency launched an investigation based on related intelligence.

The Korea Coast Guard has reportedly separated Inspector A from Inspector B by transferring him to another department.

In addition, an internal audit of Inspector A is planned based on the results of the police investigation.

The police are investigating the exact circumstances, including the reason Inspector A attached the GPS tracker.
