Suwon City in Gyeonggi Province has been selected for the "2026 Barrier-Free Tourism Environment Creation Contest Project" organized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, securing 4.25 billion won in national funding.
The barrier-free tourism environment contest project aims to create a travel environment where all tourists-including people with disabilities, the elderly, pregnant women, and those accompanied by infants-can move between tourist sites, use key tourist facilities, and access information without restrictions.
Suwon City announced on December 17 that it was selected in the "Strengthening Barrier-Free Tourism Connectivity" category (4 billion won in national funding) and the "Open Tourist Site" category (250 million won in national funding), securing a total of 4.25 billion won in national funding.

The target site for the open tourist site project is Hwaseong Haenggung Palace. In 2026, Suwon City will implement projects such as improving drainage at the Hwaseong Haenggung Byeolju, operating the Taepyeongseongdae program, and strengthening QR-based guidance services.
The project to strengthen barrier-free tourism connectivity will be carried out in the areas of Suwon Hwaseong Fortress and Haenggung-dong from 2026 to 2028. Major initiatives include: introducing new mobility vehicles, replacing the Hwaseong tourist train that has reached the end of its service life, introducing city buses, developing tourism course products, designing and establishing a guidance system within Suwon Hwaseong Fortress, and improving the convenience of private facilities.
On December 16, Suwon City signed a "business agreement for the creation of open tourist sites in 2026 and the promotion of barrier-free tourism" with the Korea Tourism Organization at the Barrier-Free Tourism Governance General Assembly held at the Westin Josun Seoul, pledging cooperation.
