Urban Regeneration Projects in Nine Locations, Including Yeowol-dong, Bucheon, to Be Completed Within the Year

Urban regeneration projects currently underway in nine locations across Gyeonggi-do, including Wolpi-dong in Ansan-si, will all be completed by the end of December.

The urban regeneration project is a government and Gyeonggi-do initiative aimed at supporting the improvement of residential environments and living conditions in declining old city centers, where aging housing is increasing due to population and business decreases. The goal is to revitalize urban areas and restore local communities to activate urban regeneration. Gyeonggi-do had the highest number of selections nationwide, with 72 locations chosen for the government’s urban regeneration contest project.

Looking at the main projects by region, in Wolpi-dong, Seoul Institute of the Arts and local residents collaborated to establish a Culture and Welfare Community Center, a Startup Incubation Center for young people and aspiring entrepreneurs, and a street specialized in culture and the arts. The operation of the Social Economy Support Center and university-linked programs is expected to inject new vitality into the local economy.

In Yeowol-dong, Bucheon-si, a village parking lot similar to those found in apartment complexes was created for the first time in the country, in connection with the street housing maintenance project. Centered around an 85-space public parking lot on a 3,400-square-meter site, the local alley environment was improved and the overall residential environment was enhanced, resulting in higher resident satisfaction. In particular, it is being recognized as a model case that provided a practical solution for aging residential areas centered on private vehicles.

In addition, a variety of projects tailored to the characteristics and needs of each region were promoted, including: the Baemnae Park public parking lot in Daeya-dong, Siheung-si; the Community Center in Songjeong-dong, Gwangju-si; the Comprehensive Welfare Center for Workers in Sangdaewon-dong, Seongnam-si; the Pearl Buck Cultural Street in Simgokbon-dong, Bucheon-si; the Intergenerational Community Space in Yeonmu-dong, Suwon-si; the Cultural Development Center in Gwangmyeong 3-dong, Gwangmyeong-si; and the Win-Win Dream Plaza in Dang-dong, Gunpo-si.

Gyeonggi-do is establishing a collaborative system with cities, counties, experts, and urban regeneration support centers to ensure the success of the urban regeneration projects. The province monitors project progress on a monthly basis and continues to strengthen its field-oriented management system.

Ahn Seonghyeon, Director of Urban Regeneration at Gyeonggi-do, stated, "Urban regeneration projects that expand the foundation for self-sustaining growth in old city centers and restore local communities are being completed sequentially," adding, "We will continue to do our best in project management to realize the purpose of each regional project so that residents can truly feel the impact."
