On December 16, Incheon City announced that it has established a comprehensive transportation plan ahead of the administrative system reorganization scheduled for July next year.
Under the reorganization, starting July 1 next year, the current Jung-gu and Dong-gu districts will become Yeongjong-gu, centered on Yeongjongdo, and Jemulpo-gu, covering the inland areas of Jung-gu and Dong-gu. Seo-gu will be divided into Geomdan-gu, covering the Geomdan area, and Seohae-gu, covering the remaining areas.
Coinciding with the opening of the Third Link Bridge in January next year, the city will introduce two new bus routes (No. 281 and No. 282) in Yeongjong-gu and deploy 16 new vehicles. In addition, in February next year, a new metropolitan express bus (M-Bus) route, M6463 (Yeongjong Sky City-Seoul Yangjae), will begin operation.
The city will utilize both the public bus garage in Unbuk-dong and the parking lot at Incheon International Airport Terminal 2 as bus depots, and is also considering establishing additional depots in the long term. Furthermore, the city plans to enhance convenience for residents by installing seven new bus stops, upgrading information signs, and adding 16 more Bus Information Terminals (BIT).
In Geomdan-gu, three new bus routes (No. 991, No. 9902, and Eum 82) were introduced and 15 vehicles were deployed in connection with the Geomdan extension of Incheon Subway Line 1, which opened in June this year.
Existing bus routes will also be readjusted by January next year to establish a transfer system centered on Ara Station and Singeomdanjungang Station on Line 1. Additionally, by the end of this month, five more vehicles will be added to three metropolitan bus routes to improve accessibility to the Seoul metropolitan area. The Geomdan Industrial Complex public bus depot will be completed this month, and the city plans to gradually secure additional depots by 2028.
In addition, the city plans to open new roads connecting east-west (Geomdan-Yangchon IC to Bongsudaero) and north-south (Geomdan New Town to Daegok-dong) in Geomdan-gu to respond to the increasing population and traffic volume.
An Incheon City official stated, "The launch of Yeongjong-gu and Geomdan-gu is not just an administrative reorganization, but an important turning point that will newly reshape Incheon's living and commuting zones. We will ensure the comprehensive transportation plan is implemented without a hitch."
