In his commemorative speech, Chairman Jung stated, "The Jangseong Pine Data Center will serve as a key infrastructure leading the era of artificial intelligence, cloud, and big data. It will play a pivotal role in revitalizing the regional economy and strengthening national competitiveness. Based on our best-in-class technology and quality, we will ensure timely completion and set a new milestone for data centers in Korea."
The Jangseong Pine Data Center is the first regional data center project initiated by the private sector since the government announced its "Policy to Mitigate Data Center Concentration in the Seoul Metropolitan Area" in 2023. With a total project cost of 395.9 billion won, the center will be built on a 32,082-square-meter site and will feature a six-story, 26 MW-class data center and a two-story operations building. The power receiving capacity represents the maximum amount of electricity the data center can be supplied with. The 26 MW capacity is equivalent to the simultaneous electricity usage of approximately 50,000 households, based on the national average monthly household electricity consumption of 363 kWh. Completion is scheduled for December 2027.
The Gwangju Research and Development Special Zone, where the project is located, is the second largest in Korea after Daedeok Special Zone. It is currently being developed into a large-scale industry-academia cooperation complex, including the National AI Data Center and the National Artificial Intelligence Convergence Project Group.
Daewoo Engineering & Construction signed a contract with the project company, PineDC PFV, on December 8 and will participate as both an investor and the main contractor. The company is expanding its scope beyond simple construction to include development, investment, and operations, in pursuit of securing new growth engines.
A representative from Daewoo Engineering & Construction stated, "Amid a sluggish housing market, we will focus on diversifying our business portfolio in line with the transition to renewable energy and the expansion of artificial intelligence. Leveraging our strong technological competitiveness and experience in constructing the Gangnam Data Center (GDC) in Yangjae-dong, we will ensure the highest quality and timely completion."
