Regained Consciousness One Day After Collapsing from Cardiac Arrest
"Received ECMO and Stent Treatment"
Sungje Kim, the 65-year-old Mayor of Uiwang in Gyeonggi Province, who was hospitalized in a state of cardiac arrest after suddenly losing consciousness and collapsing, regained consciousness after one day.
According to the Uiwang city government on December 15, Mayor Kim regained consciousness on the morning of the same day and is currently recovering. Although his consciousness was not fully clear after he opened his eyes in the morning, his condition has gradually improved, and he is now reportedly able to communicate briefly with his family.
However, as he is still in the recovery phase, detailed examinations are ongoing. No abnormalities have been found in his brain, but tests are still underway to check for any other issues, including those related to his cardiovascular system.
Previously, at around 4:09 p.m. the previous day, Mayor Kim reportedly lost consciousness and collapsed while visiting a golf practice range alone inside his apartment complex in Uiwang. The fire authorities responded to a report stating, "Someone has collapsed at the golf practice range in the apartment complex," and found Mayor Kim in cardiac arrest. They performed CPR and transported him to the hospital.
About 20 minutes after arriving at the hospital, Mayor Kim underwent extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and stent insertion procedures to improve blood flow. He regained his breathing and pulse, but had not regained consciousness until the morning of December 15.
An official from Uiwang city stated, "We received word from the hospital that Mayor Kim has regained consciousness and is able to communicate with his family," adding, "Although he has passed the critical stage, he will need to rest and recover sufficiently going forward."
