The KOSPI closed lower, pressured by heavy net selling from foreign investors and institutions.
On December 15, the KOSPI ended trading at 4,090.59, down 76.57 points (1.84%) from the previous session. Trading volume was provisionally tallied at 344.01 million shares, with a trading value of 15.2915 trillion won.
By investor type, institutions and foreigners recorded net sales of 474 billion won and 959.8 billion won, respectively, while individual investors made net purchases of 1.4151 trillion won. In the futures market, institutions were net buyers of 781.7 billion won, while foreigners and individuals posted net sales of 714.9 billion won and 66 billion won, respectively. Program trading saw net sales of 233.8 billion won in arbitrage trading and 769.3 billion won in non-arbitrage trading.
More sectors declined than advanced. The construction sector fell by 4.05%, followed by electrical and electronics (down 3.01%), medical precision (down 2.79%), transportation equipment (down 2.76%), machinery and equipment (down 2.23%), securities (down 2.22%), manufacturing (down 2.1%), finance (down 1.58%), IT services (down 1.34%), distribution (down 1.01%), real estate (down 0.77%), insurance (down 0.7%), and non-metallics (down 0.67%). In contrast, the pharmaceutical sector rose by 2.47%, metals by 1.79%, textiles and apparel by 1.05%, and paper and lumber by 0.75%.
Most of the large-cap stocks by market capitalization also declined. Samsung Electronics dropped 3.76%, SK Hynix 2.98%, LG Energy Solution 0.67%, Hyundai Motor 2.65%, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries 3.84%, Doosan Enerbility 3.26%, Kia 1.43%, KB Financial Group 0.95%, and Hanwha Aerospace 5.52%. On the other hand, Samsung Biologics rose 4.73% and Celltrion closed up 0.54%.
On the day, 351 stocks advanced, 532 stocks declined, and 45 stocks remained unchanged. Two stocks hit the upper price limit.
The KOSDAQ index ended slightly higher, supported by net buying from individual investors. The KOSDAQ closed at 938.83, up 1.49 points (0.16%) from the previous session. By investor type, institutions and foreigners recorded net sales of 120.8 billion won and 32.2 billion won, respectively, while individuals were net buyers of 188.6 billion won.
Among the large-cap stocks on the KOSDAQ, more stocks rose than fell. Alteogen gained 0.69%, EcoPro BM 2.1%, ABL Bio 3.05%, LegoChem Biosciences 0.96%, Peptron 0.37%, Samchundang Pharm 0.87%, and Robotis 3.47%. In contrast, EcoPro declined 1.08%, Rainbow Robotics 0.1%, Kolon TissueGene 1.23%, HLB 2.18%, and LIG Nex1 3.14%.
Meanwhile, in the Seoul foreign exchange market, the won/dollar exchange rate was trading at 1,471.5 won, down 5.6 won from the previous session.
