Gangjin County and Jeollanam-do will hold a signing ceremony for a joint memorandum of understanding (MOU) on December 26 at the Wellness Fuso Center inside Gangjin Sports Complex. The agreement aims to facilitate the smooth progress of the Gangjin Bay Crossing Bridge (marine bridge) construction project. This MOU marks the first official step toward collaboration, with the goal of directly connecting the eastern and western living zones across Gangjin Bay, improving transportation accessibility, and promoting balanced regional development as well as revitalizing tourism and logistics.

The Gangjin Bay Crossing Bridge construction project is a large-scale social overhead capital (SOC) initiative planned for the long term, from 2026 to 2034. The project will be further developed through step-by-step processes such as a basic concept study, feasibility assessment, investment review, and design. The final location and scale of the bridge will be determined based on legal and administrative reviews, resident feedback, and consultations with relevant agencies.

Gangjin County has identified communication with local residents as a key priority throughout the project. The county plans to gather feedback at each stage of the studies and administrative procedures to develop reasonable alternatives.

Jeollanam-do and Gangjin County are also considering the possibility of upgrading the current local road route to a national support local road (nationally supported local road). If designated as such, the project could receive national funding, so consultations with relevant ministries are being carried out in parallel.

An official from the county stated, "This agreement is a starting point based on thorough review and consensus-building," adding, "We will work with Jeollanam-do to pursue the project in a manner that is both procedurally sound and sustainable."
