On December 15, Jangseong County in Jeollanam-do announced that it has begun construction of a data center for the first time in the province, marking its leap forward as a hub for advanced industries.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the "Jangseong Pine Data Center" was held that morning at the Nam-myeon Advanced 3 District Promotion Hall in Jangseong County. The event was attended by Kim Yungrok, Governor of Jeollanam-do; Lee Gaeho, National Assemblyman for the district; Kim Hanjong, Mayor of Jangseong County; Shim Minseop, Chairman of the Jangseong County Council; provincial and county council members; officials from the Ministry of Economy and Finance and Korea Industrial Complex Corporation; and representatives from participating companies, totaling more than 300 attendees.

A data center is a facility that houses essential servers, networks, and storage devices required for advanced data-related industries such as artificial intelligence and cloud computing. The Jangseong Pine Data Center is the first case of a regionally distributed data center built in accordance with the government's policy to ease the concentration of such centers in the Seoul metropolitan area. The total project cost is 395.9 billion won. The first phase will have a capacity of 26MW, with plans to expand up to 60MW in the future. Participating companies include CJ OliveNetworks, Hyundai Motor Securities, Daewoo Engineering & Construction, and Pine & Partners Asset Management Co., Ltd.

The location is also noteworthy. The area where the Jangseong Pine Data Center will be built is a hub for advanced and medical industries, with facilities such as the National Cardiovascular Center and the Nano Technology Second General Industrial Complex nearby. The presence of large-scale residential complexes in the vicinity makes it easier to secure talent, and various synergistic effects are also expected.

Since 2023, following the launch of the 8th popularly elected administration, Jangseong County has been pushing forward with the data center project at a rapid pace, including signing a land purchase agreement with the Gwangju Urban Corporation. Last year, a project task force was launched, and a business agreement was signed with Jangseong County, Jeollanam-do, CJ OliveNetworks, and Pine & Partners Asset Management. Subsequently, the county secured 74.5 billion won from the Ministry of Economy and Finance's Regional Revitalization Investment Fund and 41.2 billion won from the Industrial Complex Environment Improvement Fund, accelerating the project. Construction is scheduled to be completed around February 2028, with operations set to begin in March.

Kim Hanjong, Mayor of Jangseong County, stated, "We plan to use the Jangseong Pine Data Center-the first of its kind in Jeollanam-do-as a catalyst for further growth, including developing a data center on the site of the former Korea Cement Geondong Mine and linking RE100-based eco-friendly energy infrastructure. We will foster it as a forward base for data centers in Korea."
