While the police have been conducting a search and seizure operation at Coupang for the sixth consecutive day following the massive leak of customer personal information, they announced that, as of now, there is no confirmation of secondary damages resulting from the leaked data.
At a regular press briefing on the 15th, Park Jeongbo, Commissioner of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, stated, "The search and seizure operation is still ongoing today," adding, "Because the original data at Coupang is so extensive, it is taking a long time to selectively seize the necessary information together with Coupang's system engineers."
Regarding the possibility of secondary damage, he explained, "The leaked data could be misused for criminal purposes in its original form, or it could be processed and utilized in other ways, so at this point, we cannot definitively determine whether there has been any damage." He added that in order to confirm whether information used in a crime originated from this data leak, "it is necessary to investigate how the perpetrator obtained the information."
The police have been searching the Coupang headquarters in Songpa-gu, Seoul, since the first raid on the 9th, continuing for six days except for a break on the 14th. The search and seizure operation is expected to be completed as early as today or the following day.
This operation has been conducted by directly checking and downloading data from Coupang's large-scale internal servers, rather than from cloud servers, and it is reported that approximately 60% of the total seizure target has been completed so far.
Going forward, the police plan to analyze the seized materials to identify any external intruders or access routes, and will also investigate whether there were any violations in Coupang's management of personal information.
So far, one suspect-a former employee of Chinese nationality-has been booked in connection with this case. Commissioner Park stated, "We plan to determine the charges through analysis of the seized materials and further investigation."
