On December 15, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province (Governor Kim Jin-tae) announced that it has secured a total of 97.3 billion won in national funding for disaster safety to protect the lives of residents and ensure regional safety.
This amount represents an increase of approximately 62% compared to the previous year’s 60.2 billion won, reflecting the province’s strong commitment to responding to worsening disaster conditions caused by recent climate change and other factors.
In particular, to protect the lives and property of residents from natural disasters such as typhoons and heavy rainfall, the province secured 95.7 billion won in national funding for disaster prevention projects for 2026 (with a total project budget of 191.5 billion won including local funds).
The detailed projects will be implemented across five sectors, and the province plans to improve disaster-vulnerable areas based on the significantly increased budget compared to the previous year.
First, for the comprehensive maintenance of flood-prone living areas-a complex project involving two or more related ministries-27 billion won will be invested in 15 locations, including Samcheok Jawon District, Yeongwol Seokhang District, and Yanggu Suip 3 District. This marks a 134.8% increase from last year’s 11.5 billion won.
For the maintenance of disaster risk improvement districts in areas prone to frequent flooding and landslides, the province plans to invest 37.4 billion won in 36 locations, including Gangneung Uam District, Jeongseon Yemi District, and Cheorwon Daedaegol District. This is a 108.9% increase from last year’s 17.9 billion won.
In addition, the province secured 30.1 billion won for the maintenance of steep slope collapse risk areas along roads and residential sites. This covers 60 locations, including Goseong Banap District, Pyeongchang Hari District, and Inje 45 District, representing a 13.2% increase from last year’s 26.6 billion won.
The province also secured 1.2 billion won in national funding for the installation of stormwater runoff reduction facilities in one location in Samcheok Namyang 2 District and for the maintenance of three disaster-risk reservoirs in Hongcheon County.
Furthermore, 1.6 billion won in national funding has been allocated to 18 projects, including ground surveys to prevent safety accidents, and these projects will be implemented as planned.
Yeo Junghyup, Deputy Governor for Administrative Affairs of Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province, stated, "We will prioritize the safety of our residents and proactively eliminate disaster risk factors in our daily lives to create a safe Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province where residents can feel secure."
