Incheon City Launches Basic Food Security Pilot Project for Vulnerable Groups... Full Implementation in May Next Year

On December 15, Incheon City announced that starting from December, it will operate the "Basic Food Security Pilot Project" to provide food and daily necessities to vulnerable groups facing financial hardship.

This project, initiated by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, aims to proactively protect citizens experiencing financial difficulties, especially those falling through the cracks of the current welfare system. From May next year, the project will transition into a full-scale program.

In Incheon, the Donation Food Support Center (Metropolitan Food Bank) is participating in the pilot operation, which takes place every Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on the first floor of the Incheon Social Welfare Center in Namdong-gu.

Any citizen in financial difficulty can visit and receive 3 to 5 items of food and daily necessities per person, such as instant noodles, ready-to-eat rice, and seasoned seaweed, valued at around 20,000 won, for up to 50 people each week without any separate application process. During the pilot period, each person can use the service up to twice (once per month), and counseling and welfare services will also be provided upon return visits.

When the full program launches in May next year, seven local food markets in five districts will participate to improve accessibility for citizens.

An Incheon City official stated, "Through the Basic Food Security Program, we will actively identify households in crisis who have not previously received assistance and connect them to tailored welfare services according to their needs."
