The Daegu Metropolitan Office of Education will present the 39th Daegu Education Awards at the Grand Performance Hall of the Daegu Student Culture Center on December 16.
The Daegu Education Awards are presented to individuals who have made significant contributions to the development of education in Daegu. Each year, outstanding contributors in the fields of early childhood education, special education, elementary education, secondary education, and educational administration and lifelong education are nominated and selected from various sectors. From 1987 through last year, a total of 110 individuals have been honored with this award.
This year, three recipients have been selected for their contributions to advancing education in Daegu: Soonna Choi, Director of the Yeonam Public-Private Library (elementary education category); Byungok Lee, former Director of the Educational Policy Bureau at Daegu Metropolitan Office of Education (secondary education category); and Shinyoung Park, teacher at Daegu Ilmeister High School (secondary education category).
Soonna Choi, the recipient in the elementary education category, consistently implemented writing education linked to real-life experiences during her teaching career, publishing more than 20 books authored by students and greatly contributing to the spread of a culture of teachers as authors. Even after retirement, she has continued to serve as a library director and parent education instructor, dedicating herself as a lifelong educator to fostering a reading culture in the local community.
Byeongok Lee, Former Director of Educational Policy Bureau at Daegu Metropolitan Office of Education
Byungok Lee, the recipient in the secondary education category and former Director of the Educational Policy Bureau, set "improving academic achievement for all students" as the top priority and demonstrated policy leadership by establishing a groundbreaking system for ensuring basic academic skills. He also led policies to diversify and increase autonomy in high schools, and contributed to a paradigm shift in Daegu's education policy by introducing a performance-based school evaluation system that strengthened both the autonomy and accountability of school management.
Shinyoung Park, the recipient in the secondary education category and Head of Global Industry-Academic Cooperation at Daegu Ilmeister High School, established cooperative networks with leading vocational education institutions and companies abroad, including in Germany, thereby facilitating overseas employment for graduates and elevating the status of global vocational education. In addition, for 14 years, she has continued to teach at broadcasting and telecommunications middle and high schools, practicing lifelong learning by bringing the joy of learning to adult students, and has contributed to fostering students' creative capabilities through arts and maker convergence education.
Eunhee Kang, Superintendent of Daegu Education, stated, "The Daegu Education Award is the highest and most prestigious honor given to those who have made outstanding contributions in areas such as school management, educational research, student guidance, and improving educational conditions, thereby advancing education in Daegu." She added, "The remarkable footsteps of these three individuals, who have demonstrated extraordinary passion and profound dedication to Daegu's education, will remain a deep inspiration to our fellow teachers, reminding them of the true value of education."
