Yeongwol County Font "Goes Global"… Advances to Finals of Germany's IF Design Award

Yeongwolche: A Local Font from Yeongwol County Takes on the World

Yeongwol County in Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province announced that its self-developed font, "Yeongwolche," has advanced to the final judging stage of the 2026 IF Design Award, which will be held in Germany. The IF Design Award is recognized as one of the world's top three design awards, alongside Germany's Red Dot Design Award and the United States' IDEA, and is a prestigious international design competition.

Unveiled in July, "Yeongwolche" is a handwritten font inspired by the natural scenery of Yeongwol. Each character incorporates design elements symbolizing Yeongwol, such as curves reminiscent of the Donggang and Seogang Rivers, and rough lines inspired by Seondol and Yoseonam rocks.

Shortly after its release, Yeongwolche was recognized for its versatility by being used as the main slogan font at various official events hosted by the Presidential Office and central government ministries. It was featured at the National Policy Planning Committee's public briefing, the National Foundation Day celebration, the Ministry of SMEs and Startups' Venture Week, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy's Trade Day, the Presidential Office's event honoring industrial leaders, and the Local Era Committee's briefing session.

Previously, in October, Yeongwolche won the grand prize at the K-Design Award, one of Asia's top three design competitions. The font is currently available for anyone to freely download and use via the Yeongwol County Office website.

Lee Eon, head of Yeongwol County's Tourism Marketing Team, stated, "A design that began in Yeongwol is now making its voice heard on a stage involving 68 countries worldwide, and its value is being recognized."

The final results of the IF Design Award are scheduled to be announced on February 24, 2026.
