Malnourished Pet Dog Attacks, Killing Two-Year-Old Daughter
Prosecutors: "Not a Simple Accident, but Malicious Neglect"
Possible Life Sentence if Found Guilty
An incident in Oklahoma, United States, where a malnourished pet dog attacked and killed a two-year-old girl, has sparked significant public outcry.
The child's parents have been charged with first-degree murder. Prosecutors determined that the parents knowingly left the child in danger despite being aware of the dog's risk, classifying the case as "malicious breach of duty of care."
On December 12 (local time), outlets including the New York Post reported that the Oklahoma County District Attorney's Office indicted Darcy Lambert and Jordan McGuire on charges of first-degree murder and animal cruelty.
Their daughter, Lachlyn Rose McGuire, died on November 18 of last year after being bitten by one of the family's four dogs at their home in Oklahoma City.
On the day of the incident, police responded to a report that the child was not breathing and found Lachlyn with severe injuries believed to be caused by an animal attack. However, the investigation revealed even more shocking details. According to prosecutors, Lachlyn had previously suffered serious injuries after being bitten by the same dog before her death.
Additionally, at the time of the incident, three of the four dogs in the house were found to be malnourished, and the dog in question had been left alone in the same room with the child for a significant period. Police stated, "The parents took no action to separate the child from the dog or to prevent the danger."
The couple was initially charged with second-degree murder, but as the investigation progressed, the charges were elevated to first-degree murder. Furthermore, two counts of animal cruelty were added due to their failure to properly care for the dogs. Prosecutors stated, "The defendants were aware that the dog was dangerous but did not protect the child, which constitutes not merely negligence but malicious neglect."
Under Oklahoma law, a conviction for first-degree murder can result in a life sentence, and in certain cases, the death penalty may also be imposed. The couple is currently in custody awaiting trial, each with bail set at $1 million (approximately 1.47 billion won).
