Five Crew Members Fall Overboard
About 33 Kilometers Offshore
The Coast Guard launched a rescue operation after a crew member fell overboard from a merchant vessel passing through the waters southwest of Seogwipo.
According to the Seogwipo Coast Guard, at approximately 4:47 p.m. on December 12, a report was received that five crew members had fallen into the sea from the merchant vessel A (8,580 tons, 10 crew members) about 33 kilometers southwest of Seogwipo Port.
The Coast Guard stated that immediately after receiving the report, they dispatched five patrol vessels, two coastal rescue boats, and a helicopter to the accident site, and requested rescue cooperation from nearby ships. The Coast Guard also reported that one Navy vessel and one vessel from the Southern Fisheries Management Service joined the rescue efforts.
Current weather conditions at the accident site include a northeasterly wind blowing at 10 to 14 meters per second and waves of around 2 meters.
The Coast Guard is investigating the cause of the crew members' fall into the sea.
