In Cooperation with the Korea Automobile Insurance Compensation Association and Daejeon Dunsan Police Station
The Financial Supervisory Service has detected a delivery driver who fraudulently obtained tens of millions of won in insurance payouts through intentional accidents.
On the 14th, the Financial Supervisory Service announced that it had conducted a joint investigation with the Korea Automobile Insurance Compensation Association and uncovered that a motorcycle delivery driver, identified as Mr. A, had fraudulently claimed 87 million won in insurance payouts through 33 intentional accidents. The agency reported Mr. A to the police for investigation. Through a working-level council with the association and others, the Financial Supervisory Service carried out a planned investigation into suspects of intentional motorcycle accidents in the Daejeon area and requested an official investigation. Based on these findings, the Daejeon Dunsan Police Station referred Mr. A's case to the prosecution on the 10th.
Mr. A deliberately caused accidents by approaching vehicles reversing on the road with his motorcycle. The targets were vehicles reversing on narrow roads, such as backstreets, either to yield or to park. For example, when a truck was reversing, Mr. A would wait without making any effort to avoid the accident, intentionally making contact between his motorcycle and the reversing vehicle to induce multiple intentional accidents.
He also caused intentional accidents by targeting vehicles that made sudden lane changes, either by failing to slow down or by accelerating and colliding with the rear or the left or right side of the other vehicle. When a vehicle in the first lane changed lanes to make a right turn at an intersection, Mr. A would deliberately make contact with the vehicle using his motorcycle, without attempting to slow down or avoid the collision.
The Financial Supervisory Service stated, "Recently, there have been many cases of intentional motorcycle accidents targeting vehicles that violate traffic laws, such as reckless lane changes or one-way violations. We urge drivers to prevent insurance fraud by strictly following traffic regulations and practicing defensive driving." The agency added, "In particular, insurance fraud involving motorcycles has been found to target vehicles with large blind spots, such as trucks. Therefore, when reversing or changing lanes, please make sure to check for vehicles in blind spots and maintain a safe lane distance for safe driving."
They further advised, "If you suspect an intentional car accident, please secure evidence such as CCTV footage or black box recordings and actively report it to the Financial Supervisory Service or the insurance company’s reporting center. Insurance fraud undermines the foundation of the insurance system, which is meant to serve as a social safety net by reasonably distributing risk, and leads to higher premiums for many honest policyholders. Therefore, we will continue to actively cooperate with the police and other relevant agencies to eradicate insurance fraud in the future."
