Hanyang University ERICA DC Grid Selected for Open-Lab Project

Laying the Foundation to Become a Hub for Technology Commercialization

The DC Grid Energy Innovation Research Center at Hanyang University ERICA Campus announced on December 15 that it will become a hub for technology commercialization after being selected for the "Open-Lab Fostering Support Project for University-Regional Industry Linkage," supported by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Korea Technology Commercialization Promotion Agency.

The Open-Lab project aims to transfer public research achievements to local companies and establish technology commercialization models through collaboration between universities and government-funded research institutes.

Since its establishment in 2023, the DC Grid Center has been developing high-speed circuit breaker technology for direct current distribution networks, focusing on the HVDC Power Research Laboratory.

The research team has secured key performance features that meet industrial requirements, such as bidirectional current interruption, suppression of transient overvoltage, and high-speed response characteristics. They have also strengthened their competitiveness by verifying the feasibility of applying these technologies to real-world power systems.

In particular, the center's capability to provide solutions for high-density power infrastructure is gaining attention amid the increasing high-power electricity demand from AI data centers.

At the KERICA Symposium and DC Grid Annual Conference, held jointly with the "HANYANG ERICA TECH SHOW 2025," the research directions and industrial impact of next-generation direct current-based power technologies were highlighted.

Lee Bangwook, Director of the Center, said, "Through the Open-Lab, we were able to directly identify the on-site needs of local companies and accelerate technology demonstration. We plan to expand application fields beyond data centers to include electric vehicle charging and renewable energy facilities, thereby contributing to solving local power issues."

The Hanyang University ERICA Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation stated that it plans to expand the Open-Lab project in the future, further strengthening the link between local industries and university laboratories and continuously enhancing the region's technology commercialization capabilities.
