First UNESCO World Heritage Committee to Be Held in Korea: Cultural Heritage Administration and Busan Begin Joint Preparations UNESCO World Heritage Committee On-site Meeting

The Cultural Heritage Administration and Busan Metropolitan City will sign a work agreement at 2:00 p.m. on December 12 at the Government Complex Daejeon to ensure the successful hosting of the 48th UNESCO World Heritage Committee, which will be held in Busan in July next year.

The agreement includes ▲ support for personnel and budget ▲ creating an environment for international conferences by utilizing Busan’s infrastructure ▲ and promoting K-Heritage through the planning and operation of programs linked to World Heritage sites.

With “Heritage of Busan as a Wartime Capital during the Korean War” having been selected last month as a priority candidate for UNESCO World Heritage inscription, a variety of programs will be prepared to showcase the host city’s rich cultural assets during the committee meeting.

The Wartime Capital Heritage is a serial heritage composed of eleven sites, including the Provisional Capital Memorial Hall (Gyeongmudae), Seokdang Museum of Dong-A University (Provisional Central Government Building), Amidong Tombstone Village, Busan Port Pier 1, Busan Citizens Park (Hayarija Base), United Nations Memorial Cemetery in Korea, and Yeongdo Bridge.

The Cultural Heritage Administration selected Busan as the candidate city in June after a comprehensive evaluation of the conference venue conditions, city accessibility, and connectivity with nearby World Heritage sites. This decision was officially approved at the 47th World Heritage Committee held on July 15.

Going forward, the Cultural Heritage Administration plans to work closely with Busan Metropolitan City, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and other relevant organizations to ensure the successful hosting of the 48th UNESCO World Heritage Committee.
