Narrow Mountain Roads, Long Winter... Ulleung County Takes Preemptive Action for Rural Bus Safety

Ulleung County in North Gyeongsang Province held a Rural Bus Winter Public Transportation Accident Prevention Meeting at 2:00 p.m. on December 10 in the second conference room of the Ulleung County Office. The meeting was organized to prevent rural bus traffic accidents caused by adverse weather conditions such as snowfall and icy roads during the winter, and to provide residents with safe and convenient public transportation services.

This meeting was attended by Nam Han-gwon, Governor of Ulleung County; Choi Dae-geun, Chief of Ulleung Police Station; the Director of Economic and Transportation Policy; the Head of Safety and Construction; township and village heads within Ulleung County; Park U-beom, Head of Life Safety and Transportation at Ulleung Police Station; Kim Chang-hoon, Head of the Traffic Division at Ulleung Police Station; representatives of rural bus operators; and the head of the transportation workers' union. It served as a meaningful occasion to discuss Ulleung County’s public transportation safety measures.


The main topics discussed included establishing an integrated and rapid response communication network in the event of operational disruptions or accidents during the winter, and prioritizing snow removal operations in vulnerable sections of public transportation routes.


The head of the transportation workers' union, who attended the meeting, stated, “Transportation workers bear a heavy responsibility, as safe driving is directly linked to the lives of our residents. The union will also prioritize safe operations as its highest value and will actively participate in strict compliance with safety regulations and thorough vehicle inspections.”


Chief Choi Dae-geun of the police station said, “To ensure safety during the winter, the police will work closely with the county and transportation companies to strengthen patrols in major icy and accident-prone areas, and will do everything possible to manage traffic control and safety during adverse weather conditions.”


Governor Nam Han-gwon emphasized, “Public transportation is the lifeline of our residents, so safe and uninterrupted operations must be ensured even in winter. The county will spare no administrative support, including expanding snow removal equipment and establishing an emergency contact system, in close cooperation with transportation companies, the police, and township and village offices. I also ask all residents to actively cooperate in using public transportation during adverse weather conditions.”


Based on the results of this meeting, Ulleung County plans to thoroughly implement winter rural bus safety management measures and establish an integrated rapid response communication network to create a public transportation environment where residents can feel safe and secure.
