KT and Samsung Electronics Succeed in Verifying AI-RAN Technology: "Improved Network Quality"

"We Will Lead the Way in Securing Core 6G Technologies"

KT and Samsung Electronics Succeed in Verifying AI-RAN Technology: "Improved Network Quality" Yonhap News Agency

KT and Samsung Electronics announced on December 11 that they have successfully validated their 'Artificial Intelligence (AI) Radio Access Network (AI-RAN)' technology on KT's commercial network.

The AI-RAN, jointly developed by KT and Samsung Electronics, is a technology that analyzes data exchanged between base stations and devices in real time to provide each user with an optimal network environment.

The two companies have been conducting joint research on AI-RAN since 2023. This year, they signed a multilateral business agreement with NVIDIA to actively pursue research and development of AI-RAN based on Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) technology.

This AI-RAN validation on the commercial network was conducted in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province. On average, about 18,000 users per day used the network equipped with AI-RAN technology. The results showed a significant reduction in issues such as dropped connections that repeatedly occurred when certain customers moved between cells (base stations). KT also explained that the network quality for other customers with similar movement patterns improved as well, leading to an overall enhancement in cell-wide network quality.

Traditional domestic and international communication networks have mostly optimized the network on a per-cell basis. With this approach, the same network configuration values are applied to all users connected to a cell, making it difficult to finely reflect the individual situations or characteristics of each user.

To address this issue, the two companies introduced a new approach that provides user-customized network quality. By utilizing real-time quality data such as signal strength and quality fluctuation trends, they can predict the likelihood of problems and offer optimized configuration values tailored to each user's circumstances.

Jin Kuk Jung, Executive Vice President and Head of the Next-Generation Communications Research Center at Samsung Research, said, "This is an important achievement that clearly demonstrates AI can enhance user experience in real communication networks. Both research institutes will continue to lead the future of AI-driven communications technology through ongoing technological advancement and validation."

Lee Jongsik, Executive Vice President and Head of the Future Network Research Institute at KT, stated, "This validation proves the potential of AI to revolutionize network operations with a user-centric approach. The two companies will take the lead in securing core technologies for sixth-generation (6G) mobile communications and continue to innovate customer value."
