Yeosu City Launches Pan-Citizen Preparatory Committee for '2026 UN Climate Week'

Formation of a Collaborative Body Led by Civil Society
to Prepare for Hosting UN Climate Week

Yeosu City, South Jeolla Province, announced that on December 8, it held the launch ceremony for the Pan-Citizen Preparatory Committee to host the '2026 UN Climate Change Convention (UNFCCC) Climate Week' in South Korea at The Ocean Hotel.


This launch ceremony was organized as Yeosu was selected as the domestic host city for the '2026 UN Climate Week.' The event aims to establish a nationwide support base led by the private sector and to kick off citizen-participatory hosting activities in earnest.

More than 300 representatives from civil society organizations and institutions attended the ceremony, including the Carbon Neutral Practice Solidarity, Seoul Eco Club, Yeosu Disabled People’s Homecare Association, Yeosu Office of Education, the Barugesalgi Council, and the Yeosu Journalists Association.


During the first part of the event, a completion ceremony was held for the 2025 Carbon Neutral Environmental Activist Training Program, where citizen activists received official certificates. This was followed by an awards and commendation ceremony.


The main event in the second part featured congratulatory remarks from Hwang Jae-woo, Honorary Chairman of the Carbon Neutral Practice Solidarity, and Ryu Jung-gu, Executive Representative of the East-West Forum. Kim Young-joo, Co-Representative of the Carbon Neutral Practice Solidarity, presented the progress report on the establishment of the Pan-Citizen Preparatory Committee. Moon Young-soo, Head of the Yeosu Carbon Neutral Support Center, provided an explanation regarding Yeosu’s bid to host the '2026 UN Climate Week.'


Through its declaration, the Pan-Citizen Preparatory Committee emphasized the necessity of citizen participation and public-private cooperation to support the domestic hosting of the 2026 UN Climate Week. It also highlighted the importance of international collaboration and inter-institutional solidarity in responding to the climate crisis.


A city official stated, "The Pan-Citizen Preparatory Committee will play a role in facilitating public-private cooperation throughout the process of preparing to host Climate Week," adding, "Yeosu City will continue to consult with relevant organizations to secure the event."


Yeosu City is continuing discussions with the government and international organizations, and the UN Climate Change Convention is expected to announce the final host country for the 2026 UN Climate Week in December.
