Man in His 50s Urgently Arrested for Multiple Hit-and-Run Incidents and Fatal Accident While Driving Without a License

A man in his 50s was apprehended after driving a car without a license, hitting another vehicle and a pedestrian, and then fleeing the scene.

The Sacheon Police Station in South Gyeongsang Province announced on December 8 that it had urgently arrested a man in his 50s, identified as Mr. A, on charges of hit-and-run resulting in death or injury under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes, as well as unlicensed driving and failure to take necessary measures after an accident under the Road Traffic Act.

According to the police, at around 6:35 a.m. that day, Mr. A was driving a passenger car near the Samcheonpo Central Market intersection in Sacheon and collided with another passenger car traveling nearby.

Immediately after the accident, Mr. A fled the scene and, while doing so, struck a woman in her 80s who was crossing a crosswalk with the passenger-side mirror, then fled again.

As a result of the accident, the driver of the other passenger car, in his 30s, sustained minor injuries, while the woman in her 80s suffered serious injuries and was transported to the hospital, but ultimately passed away.

After the successive accidents, Mr. A reportedly abandoned the vehicle he was driving in a secluded area near Samcheonpo Port.

The police analyzed closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage and urgently arrested Mr. A at around 8:30 a.m. that day at his residence, which also serves as the store where he works.

It was confirmed that Mr. A was driving without a license; however, as his blood alcohol level was not measured, drunk driving charges were not applied.

The police are currently investigating Mr. A to determine the exact circumstances of the accident.
