Year-End Safety Alert
Strengthening Unannounced Patrols and Joint Inspections
The Busan Headquarters of the Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency, led by Director Jeong Jongdeok, has launched an emergency plan to prevent fatal accidents in the shipbuilding industry of Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam, aiming to raise safety awareness at shipyards during the year-end and New Year period.
This measure was implemented in response to five consecutive fatal accidents that occurred at shipyards in the Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam regions since September. Starting in November, the agency has urgently initiated a three-month "Safety Shipyard" project, with the goal of rapidly improving the level of safety management in the local shipbuilding industry.
Shipyards are strengthening their self-inspections and occupational safety and health activities to foster an accident prevention culture, while the agency is significantly increasing the frequency of unannounced on-site patrol inspections. For workplaces where violations such as insufficient safety measures are identified, joint inspections will be conducted with the Busan Regional Employment and Labor Office to ensure effective on-site implementation.
Jeong Jongdeok, Director of the Busan Headquarters, stated, "The series of fatal accidents is absolutely unacceptable," adding, "We hope that this emergency plan will serve as an opportunity to reestablish a strong safety mindset across all shipyards in Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam, so that they become 'accident-free shipyards.'"
