Police: "Monitoring Secondary Damages from Coupang Data Leak in Real Time"

1,527 Presidential Election Law Offenders Referred for Prosecution, 12 Arrested

On December 8, the National Police Agency stated regarding the secondary damages caused by the Coupang personal information leak, "Since the public is feeling anxious, we are checking in real time every day to see if there are any cases of misuse."

At a regular press briefing that day, a representative from the National Police Agency said, "We do not know what developments may occur from this point forward," adding, "We are providing guidance on prevention, such as warnings against smishing and voice phishing."


The police stated, "We are currently analyzing the information voluntarily submitted by Coupang and are conducting an investigation," but added, "It is difficult to comment directly on matters related to the investigation."


Regarding the sexual harassment allegations against Jang Kyungtae, a lawmaker from the Democratic Party, the police said, "On December 3, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency questioned the complainant, and on December 5, a witness was questioned," adding, "We will proceed with the investigation according to due process."


Regarding the allegation that Lee Junseok, leader of the Reform New Party, had polling costs paid on his behalf, the police stated, "The case is still under investigation," and added, "It is difficult to provide specific details regarding the schedule for his summons."


With respect to the suspicion that Kim Byungki, floor leader of the Democratic Party, used his status as a member of the National Assembly to help his son transfer universities, the police said, "The Dongjak Police Station in Seoul is conducting the necessary investigation," and added, "It is difficult to provide specific details."


Regarding election law violations in the 21st presidential election, the police stated, "We have investigated a total of 3,951 individuals. Of these, 1,527 have been referred for prosecution and 12 have been arrested," adding, "This is an increase compared to the 20th presidential election." By type, the cases involved illegal banners and posters (55.9%), other violations (18%), dissemination of false information (12.0%), election-related violence (6.0%), bribery (2.9%), and public officials' involvement in elections (2.2%).


Regarding the launch of the 'Special Investigation Headquarters for the Three Major Special Prosecutors,' the police stated, "We have decided to assign 14 members each to the investigation support team and the investigation team for the case transferred from the Special Prosecutor for the Fallen Marine," adding, "The duration of operation and the composition of personnel have not yet been determined."
