"No Improper Relationship with Student," Father Asserts
"Ex-Son-in-Law Demanded 4 Billion Won," Raises Extortion Allegation
Former national baseball team manager Ryu Joongil publicly criticized his ex-daughter-in-law's inappropriate behavior and even filed a national petition. In response, the father of his ex-daughter-in-law has come forward to refute the allegations. He asserted that his daughter never had an improper relationship with her student, and instead, claimed that their family has been unfairly vilified, including being asked for tens of billions of won by the ex-son-in-law's side.

On December 5, Mr. A, the ex-daughter-in-law's father, expressed his frustration in an interview with Yonhap News, saying, "I'm not just speaking as a parent defending my child. The injustice is so overwhelming that it brings me to tears."
"Ex-son-in-law demanded a large sum of money during divorce proceedings"
According to Yonhap News, Mr. A explained that the ex-son-in-law demanded approximately 4 billion won during the divorce process and even received a summary order from the court on charges of attempted extortion. Based on the materials he presented, the ex-son-in-law was indicted for demanding the transfer of apartment shares, 5 million won in monthly child support, and 2 billion won in alimony. Last month, he was given a summary order to pay 3 million won.
He stated, "I paid the 60 million won in divorce settlement the day after the verdict, but separate demands for a large sum of money and for us to relinquish custody of my grandson continued, preventing any agreement." He also claimed that "even recently, we were asked for money again, with threats to tip off the media and file a national petition."
Mr. A also strongly denied the core allegation of an "inappropriate relationship with a student." He explained, "The school where my daughter worked was not a regular high school. She and the students would all go on 'hotel vacations' together, order room service, and spend time together." He presented photos his daughter posted on social media from these hotel stays, as well as chat logs planning such outings with students.

Regarding the fact that she stayed at a hotel with her student, Mr. B, he said, "They stayed nearby because there was a college interview scheduled the next day," and even provided payment records for an extra bed. He questioned, "If it were an affair, would she have used a card that notified her husband and rented an extra bed?"
He also mentioned the results of the police investigation. Mr. A stated, "For several months, they conducted mobile phone forensics and location tracking, but found no evidence, and ultimately, the case was dismissed." He explained, "In the divorce lawsuit, infidelity was judged based on the concept of fidelity, but in the criminal case, the judgment was based on evidence, resulting in a not-guilty decision."
Regarding the 'costume outfit' and DNA analysis results, he claimed that the 'costume outfit' was "purchased to use with her husband," and the DNA analysis "was conducted by a private company a year after the incident and is therefore unreliable." He also countered, "There are even reports that the ex-son-in-law paid several students to collect DNA samples."
"No intention to return to teaching"...Concern over social stigma
Mr. A made it clear that his daughter has no intention of returning to teaching. He said, "I told my daughter to give up her dream of being a teacher, and she is currently preparing for the CPA exam. She has already been socially stigmatized to the point that even living a normal life is difficult."
He concluded, "Ryu is a well-known figure in Daegu, and I worry that my grandson might be ostracized at kindergarten." He added that any speculative articles or malicious comments that deviate from the facts will be met with legal action without leniency.
Previously, Ryu's ex-daughter-in-law, a former teacher identified as Ms. C, was accused by her ex-husband, Mr. Ryu, of staying at accommodations in Seoul, Gyeonggi, and Incheon with a high school student between August 2023 and January 2024, engaging in sexual acts and bringing her one-year-old son to these locations.
However, on November 14, the Seoul Southern District Prosecutors' Office dismissed the charges. In response, on December 4, Ryu revealed his identity and posted a national petition calling for the punishment of his ex-daughter-in-law.
