Milder weather continues Sunday as temperatures rise further
Rain or snow in the Seoul metropolitan area, Chungcheongnam-do, and inland/mountainous Gangwon from Saturday afternoon
Sea levels to rise due to lunar gravitational pull through December 8
This weekend, the severe cold will subside and relatively mild weather is expected to continue. However, as morning temperatures will drop below freezing in many areas, caution is needed regarding icy roads caused by recently fallen snow.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration on December 5, the morning low on Saturday, December 6 is expected to range from -8 to 2 degrees Celsius, with daytime highs between 4 and 14 degrees Celsius. Morning temperatures will be similar to or slightly higher than the seasonal average, while daytime temperatures are expected to be higher than usual. This is due to the wind over the Korean Peninsula shifting to a relatively mild westerly direction.
The forecasted temperatures for major cities are: Seoul, -1 to 7 degrees Celsius; Incheon, 1 to 9 degrees Celsius; Daejeon, -3 to 10 degrees Celsius; Gwangju, -2 to 11 degrees Celsius; Daegu, -3 to 10 degrees Celsius; Ulsan, -1 to 11 degrees Celsius; and Busan, 1 to 12 degrees Celsius.
On Sunday, December 7, morning lows are expected to range from -1 to 8 degrees Celsius, and daytime highs from 9 to 16 degrees Celsius, which is higher than Saturday.
On December 6, a trough of low pressure will pass mainly over the northern part of central Korea, bringing a chance of rain or snow in northeastern Gyeonggi Province and northern inland Gangwon Province during the morning. From afternoon into the night, rain or snow is expected in the Seoul metropolitan area, Chungcheongnam-do, northern Chungcheongbuk-do, and inland and mountainous areas of Gangwon Province. Expected precipitation is less than 5 millimeters in the Seoul metropolitan area and inland/mountainous Gangwon, and around 1 millimeter in the five West Sea Islands, Daejeon, Sejong, Chungcheongnam-do, and northern Chungcheongbuk-do.
Expected snowfall is 1 to 3 centimeters in the mountainous areas of Gangwon Province, and around 1 centimeter in northeastern Gyeonggi Province and northern inland Gangwon Province.
The atmosphere will remain very dry, especially east of the Baekdudaegan mountain range. Dry weather advisories are in effect for the mountainous and coastal regions of Gangwon Province, northeastern mountainous and coastal areas of Gyeongsangbuk-do, Daegu, and eastern regions of Gyeongsangnam-do including Busan, Ulsan, Changwon, and Gimhae. In particular, from the afternoon of December 6 through December 7, strong winds with instantaneous speeds of around 55 kilometers per hour (up to 70 kilometers per hour in mountainous areas) are expected in the mountainous and coastal areas of Gangwon Province and northeastern Gyeongsangbuk-do, increasing the risk of wildfires.
Waves will also be high at sea. On the morning of December 6, winds in the central part of the West Sea's offshore waters will reach 30 to 60 kilometers per hour (9 to 16 meters per second), with waves rising to 1.5 to 3.5 meters. Similar conditions are expected from the night of the same day in the outer offshore waters of the central East Sea and the northern part of the southern East Sea. In particular, until December 8, the gravitational pull of the moon
will cause sea levels to rise, so extra caution is advised regarding possible flooding in low-lying coastal areas.
