Police Urge Caution Over Secondary Damages From Coupang Data Breach

The National Police Agency's Integrated Response Team for Telecommunications and Financial Fraud issued a warning on December 7 regarding potential phishing and smishing attacks following the Coupang personal information leak.

Police Urge Caution Over Secondary Damages From Coupang Data Breach

Currently, the Integrated Response Team's reporting center is receiving a series of new smishing and phishing scenarios that exploit the Coupang data breach. These include schemes that prompt users to click on specific links by claiming that their ordered items may be delayed or missing, as well as methods that combine the existing card delivery impersonation tactics with the Coupang personal information leak.

The police stated that, as of now, no direct secondary damages resulting from the Coupang data breach have been confirmed. However, they emphasized the need for continued public vigilance, as new tactics may emerge or additional damages may occur in the future.

An official from the Integrated Response Team said, "Your reports play a crucial role in preventing further damage and protecting others from falling victim to similar crimes," adding, "If you suspect impersonation crimes exploiting the Coupang incident, we strongly encourage you to report them proactively."
