3.3 Million Affected
Plan Launches On-Site Emergency Response
Urgent Call for International Community Participation
Plan International Korea (hereafter referred to as Plan) announced that it has launched a fundraising campaign to initiate full-scale emergency relief activities, as millions of residents have been affected by large-scale floods and landslides that recently occurred in the Sumatra region of Indonesia.
According to Plan, the floods were triggered by record-breaking heavy rainfall and landslides that began at the end of November 2025. Severe damage has been reported across wide areas, including Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra, with villages submerged and roads and bridges destroyed. To date, more than 3.3 million people have been affected, with hundreds of thousands losing their homes. Some areas have been completely cut off from communication, electricity, and transportation, making rescue efforts extremely challenging. Additionally, over 1,000 public facilities, including hospitals and schools, have been damaged, posing a serious threat to the living conditions of local residents.
Plan Indonesia reported that immediately after the disaster, it dispatched Emergency Response Teams to Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra to begin initial relief efforts. The teams are conducting rapid damage assessments and distributing 23 tons of emergency relief supplies, including tarpaulins, blankets, bedding, hygiene kits, and menstrual hygiene products, focusing on ensuring the survival and safety of residents. The organization emphasized that it is also providing safe spaces, psychological and emotional support, and activities to ensure the continuity of education, particularly for vulnerable groups such as children, women, and people with disabilities.
Plan stated, "The collapse of access to clean drinking water and sanitation is the most critical issue, creating extremely dangerous conditions that could lead to the spread of infectious diseases." The organization added, "Many areas are isolated and difficult to reach, but we are expanding the scope of our support by cooperating with the government, military, and local NGOs, and even utilizing air transport." Plan further stressed, "Additional international support is urgently needed, especially as the safety of children and women is at risk."
Plan has launched a major fundraising campaign in Korea to support this emergency response, making it easy for citizens to participate by accepting donations through the Plan website, Naver Happybean, and official online channels. The funds raised will be prioritized for emergency survival support, including drinking water, food, temporary shelters, and sanitation, and will also be used for mid- to long-term recovery and reconstruction activities.
Plan emphasized, "Rapid participation by Korean citizens will directly help save more lives," and added, "The situation in the affected areas is urgent, and immediate support is desperately needed."
Plan stated that it will continue to work closely with local emergency response teams and partners in Indonesia to maintain ongoing activities from survival support to the recovery stage.
