Innovation That Transforms Port Operations Paradigm Gains Fresh Recognition
There is an organization that has stood on the podium at the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries Innovation Conference for three consecutive years: Busan Port Authority.
Busan Port Authority (BPA, President Song Sangkeun) received the Excellence Award and the Encouragement Award at the Port Logistics Industry Innovation Conference hosted by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, held in Yeouido, Seoul, on December 4. This marks the third consecutive year the authority has been recognized at the event.

The Excellence Award was given for the case of "Building a Virtual Gate (Digital Pre-Gate) Based on Geofencing Technology," which was recognized for resolving vehicle congestion near the port by implementing virtual gates on roads.
Busan Port Authority set up invisible virtual boundaries at specific points within the terminal and used real-time vehicle location data to automatically identify cargo trucks, dramatically improving issues such as waiting times, bottlenecks, and congestion. In particular, the application of AI-based GPS correction technology, which analyzes and learns movement patterns to enhance the accuracy of decisions and the stability of the system, was highly praised.
Geofencing is a location-based technology that establishes virtual boundaries in a space and triggers notifications or functions when a user enters or exits that area.
The case selected for the Encouragement Award, "Restructuring Container Terminal Functions and Tailored Facility Improvements at Busan Port," was evaluated as a representative model for port transformation, redefining the redeveloped North Port as a hub for Asian shipping lines.
Through the relocation of the Jasungdae Terminal, Busan Port Authority achieved a social outcome by protecting the jobs of over 600 people. For the three remaining terminals in North Port (Shinseondae, Gamman, and Singamman Terminals), the authority converted idle berths to container functions and introduced a "core component-centered modernization model," earning high marks for improving terminal productivity and achieving significant fiscal savings compared to new construction.
Song Sangkeun, President of Busan Port Authority, stated, "It is very meaningful that Busan Port's innovations have once again been recognized as exemplary cases for the national port logistics industry this year." He added, "Busan Port Authority will continue to build a port ecosystem where technology, people, innovation, and safety are harmonized, aiming to become a smart port with world-class global competitiveness."
