Mayor Park Seungwon: "We Will Strive to Promote Carbon Neutrality in Daily Life"

The efforts of residents from 12 apartment complexes in Gwangmyeong, Gyeonggi Province, have resulted in a reduction of 220 tons of carbon emissions.

On December 3, Gwangmyeong City announced the results of its evaluation for the "Exemplary Apartment for Climate Action" project, which targeted apartment complexes and other multi-family housing within the city, and held an award ceremony at the city hall's main conference room.

This project was initiated by the city to identify communities that consistently engage in activities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in daily life, such as energy saving, resource circulation, and resident-led carbon neutrality initiatives.

This year’s project, which ran for six months from May to October, saw participation from 12 apartment complexes. Through a variety of climate action initiatives, they collectively achieved a reduction of approximately 220 tons of carbon dioxide. This is equivalent to planting about 61,000 trees that are 10 years old.

On this day, the city presented awards in two categories: complexes with fewer than 800 households and those with 800 or more. In the under-800 category, "Gwangmyeong Station Prugio" was selected as the top complex, while "Gwangmyeong World Meridian" and "Brownstone 1st" were recognized as outstanding complexes.

In the 800 or more households category, "Haan 13 Complex" was named the top complex. "Gwangmyeong Station Summit Place" and "Cheolsan Station Lotte Castle & SK VIEW ClassTige" were recognized as outstanding complexes.

The selected complexes were recognized as exemplary carbon-neutral communities, as they carried out activities such as carbon neutrality education, recycling campaigns, everyday lights-off practices, and enhanced waste separation, led by the residents’ representative councils and management offices.

Park Seungwon, Mayor of Gwangmyeong, stated, "The exemplary apartments selected this time demonstrate that residents’ actions can drive urban change. We will continue to spread a culture of carbon neutrality in daily life and build a strong foundation for a sustainable city."
