Recognition for Advancing New Industries in the Southeast Region,
Strengthening the Defense Industry Base,
and Achievements in Academia-Industry Collaboration
Pusan National University (President Choi Jaewon) announced on December 4 that Professor Sanghoo Park of the Department of Mechanical Engineering (Vice President for External Affairs and Strategy) has received the Presidential Commendation in recognition of his contributions to national balanced development and regional industrial promotion.
Professor Sanghoo Park was selected as the final recipient this November by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, following recommendations from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and the Presidential Committee for Balanced National Development, as well as a public merit review. The award certificate was presented on December 3 at the Korea Institute for Advancement of Technology.
For over 20 years, Professor Park has played a key role in strengthening collaboration with the industrial ecosystem of the southeastern region, particularly in establishing the defense industry base in Busan, leveraging his extensive network built through academia-industry cooperation and government projects.
Since last year, as Director of the Future Policy Office and Vice President for External Affairs and Strategy at Pusan National University, he has achieved several milestones that have transformed Busan's new industry landscape. These include facilitating the establishment of the Hanwha Ocean Busan Engineering Center, leading the process to set up the Pusan National University-Hanwha Aerospace R&D Hub Center, and, as head of the Pusan National University RISE Project Group, contributing to attracting investment from the Korean Air Tech Center’s unmanned aerial vehicle production facility to Busan in connection with the future mobility workforce training system.
In research, Professor Park has also laid the foundation for nurturing core talent in the defense sector by bringing the Defense Agency for Technology and Quality’s defense-specialized research lab to Pusan National University, based on metallic additive manufacturing technology. Additionally, he secured the Ministry of Education’s Core Facility project, strengthening the foundation for hybrid manufacturing innovation research and technical support for local companies.
To date, Professor Park has published over 230 research papers, including 146 in SCI-level international journals, and registered more than 50 domestic and international patents, consistently contributing to academic advancement and industrial development.
He has also served as President of the Korean Society for Precision Engineering, advisor for the Production and Design Division of the Korean Society of Mechanical Engineers, and currently holds positions as advisory professor for the Army Logistics Command, policy advisory professor for the Busan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and vice president of the Korean Society for Precision Engineering.
