Around 60 Users Report to Financial Supervisory Service, Damages Estimated at Up to 200,000 Won

Following Coupang's large-scale personal information leak, an unauthorized payment incident has also occurred at the e-commerce company Gmarket.

According to the retail industry on December 2, around 60 Gmarket users reported to the Financial Supervisory Service that they had fallen victim to unauthorized payments on November 29.


The unauthorized payments reportedly occurred when gift certificates were purchased using cards registered with Gmarket's simple payment service, SmilePay. The amount of damage per individual was confirmed to range from 30,000 won to less than 200,000 won.

After recognizing the incident, Gmarket implemented additional security measures. On this day, Gmarket announced that it would strengthen personal information security to prevent secondary damage resulting from Coupang's large-scale personal information leak, recommending users to change their login passwords, enable two-step authentication, and use security notifications.


Regarding the unauthorized purchase of gift certificates (cashable goods) with cards registered to user accounts, Gmarket stated, "We have made additional identity verification mandatory to ensure safe transactions."
