Democratic Party Submits Request for Probe into 'Fabricated Investigations,' People Power Party Files Separate Request on 'External Pressure over Appeal Withdrawal' in Daejang-dong Case

Democratic Party Expands Scope to Include Moon Jae-in Administration Cases
"Discussions Will Continue Before the Plenary Session"

On December 2, the Democratic Party of Korea and the People Power Party each submitted a request to the National Assembly for a parliamentary investigation into the prosecution's decision to forgo an appeal in the Daejang-dong case. The Democratic Party called for a "parliamentary investigation to uncover the truth behind the political prosecution's fabricated investigations and indictments," while the People Power Party demanded a "parliamentary investigation into external pressure related to the prosecution's decision to forgo an appeal in the Daejang-dong development preferential treatment and corruption case."

That evening, the Democratic Party submitted a request for a parliamentary investigation to the National Assembly, covering major investigations by the Yoon Suk-yeol administration that targeted President Lee Jaemyung and the Moon Jae-in administration. Moon Geumjoo, the Democratic Party's chief spokesperson for the floor, explained, "The scope of the investigation includes not only the Daejang-dong case but also the Ssangbangwool remittance to North Korea case, the Kim Yong case, the Wolseong nuclear power plant case, the real estate statistics manipulation case, and the murder of a public official in the West Sea. The investigation aims to uncover the truth behind fabricated investigations and indictments by the prosecution under the Yoon administration, which targeted opposition party members and former government officials." This expands the scope of the parliamentary investigation to include not only alleged prosecutorial misconduct in the Daejang-dong case, as initially claimed, but also related incidents from the Moon Jae-in administration. The request for a parliamentary investigation was submitted under the names of 166 Democratic Party members, including Moon Jinseok, the party's chief deputy floor leader.

Earlier, the People Power Party also submitted a request for a parliamentary investigation under the names of Song Eonseok, the party's floor leader, and 107 others, to address allegations of external pressure related to the decision to forgo an appeal in the first trial of the Daejang-dong case. Kim Eunhye, the party's chief deputy floor leader, told reporters, "The Daejang-dong case should have been appealed, but it was swept under the rug due to external pressure," adding, "The essence of the matter is that 780 billion won, which should have gone to the original residents of Daejang-dong, ended up in the hands of criminals."

The two parties have been negotiating a parliamentary investigation into the prosecution's decision to forgo an appeal in the Daejang-dong case. However, due to disagreements over who should lead the investigation, they failed to reach a consensus and each submitted their own request. Nevertheless, further negotiations between the parties are expected. Kim Hyunjung, the Democratic Party's floor spokesperson, explained, "The People Power Party submitted their request unilaterally, so the Democratic Party submitted ours immediately as well," adding, "Discussions and negotiations between the parties will continue until the matter is brought to a plenary session."
