"Elderly, Children, and Those with Underlying Health Conditions Need Special Caution"
The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency announced on December 1 that it will operate the "Cold-Related Illness Emergency Room Surveillance System" until February 28 of next year.
The Cold-Related Illness Emergency Room Surveillance System is centered on monitoring health damage caused by cold waves, with approximately 500 emergency medical institutions nationwide cooperating with local health centers and local governments.
Cold-related illnesses are conditions directly caused by exposure to low temperatures, such as hypothermia, frostbite, and chilblains.
During the 2024-2025 season, a total of 334 cases of cold-related illnesses were reported. The most common symptom among patients was hypothermia, with 268 cases. In particular, a large number of cases occurred among the elderly aged 65 and older, accounting for 183 cases.
The agency recommended that elderly individuals, who have a reduced ability to maintain body temperature compared to the general adult population, should refrain from outdoor activities on cold days and pay special attention to keeping warm.
During winter, blood vessels constrict and blood pressure rises, leading to an increased occurrence of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases such as myocardial infarction and stroke. In addition, individuals with chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and hypertension should be especially careful, as sudden temperature changes can cause blood pressure to rise rapidly and worsen symptoms.
Im Seungkwan, Commissioner of the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency, stated, "Although the average temperature this winter is expected to be similar to previous years, temperature fluctuations are likely to be significant. Sudden cold snaps may occur, so I urge the elderly, children, those with underlying health conditions, and their caregivers to exercise particular caution and attention."
